My wife and I probably look like the average suburban couple. About six months ago we bought a house and moved from our urban apartment where everything we needed was literally across the street, including the office where I worked. Now, we live in a very small suburban village of approximately 6000 people outside of the quickly growing Charlotte, NC. I work as a programmer; she works from home as a private music teacher. Neither of us grew up on a farm, or have ever dealt with chickens. But none of that mattered when a rooster showed up in our yard.
On New Years Eve a friend had come into town to spend the weekend with us and some friends. We were having a party later but didn’t really have anything to do in the mean time. He mentions about exploring the small wooded area behind my house since I simply hadn’t done it yet, so off we go. 300 ft. of wooded area before we made it to the next neighboorhood was, for us, the promise of adventure, the unknown and as we soon found out - trash (apparently our neighboors are less than excited about this small but abundant oasis of adventure). As we tried to rip a very old bicycle out from it’s entanglement of grown over vines, my wife was on her way out to join the hunt. Suddenly, we heard her call. We called back telling her to come and see our riveting find, a rusted over bicycle! She however was insistant that her find was more interesting so we found our way back out to realize she was actually standing in our backyard pointing at a large red rooster.
Ronny as he was later named, it turns out is a Rhode Island Red (or perhaps a New Hampshire Red, hard to tell). We’ve yet to weigh him but I’d guess at least 7 lbs. He’s red and has a large set of incredible green tail feathers. We didn’t really know what to do, so we did what anyone would do, we left him alone, and hoped he’d wander back to … where ever while we continued our Louis and Clark expedition. Dragging my wife back to see our find we took photos, removed the bicycle from it’s prison and contiued on our way.
The rest of our journey was, surisingly, riddled with boredom. Not much else to be found except for a horrifyingly bad pile of trash behind a neighboors house. The pile was a fascinating blend of items: trash bags, old rotting wood, flourecent light bulbs, and old riding lawn mower and sitting right on top of the pile, a Bible. Apparently, these people are through with religion and saving the environment, which makes them a bit difficult to place politically.
As we wandered back into our backyard we realized that the rooster was gone. Mostly relieved at one less thing to worry about we were happy we got to see him and just as happy he had moved forward on his own Louis and Clark expedition. As we stood surveying our new rusted bicycle we heard rustling and clucking coming from the woods where we had just exited. Ronny, it seems, had attempted to follow us as we ventured out and back in from our exploration. We determined that no animal should be left without care, so we brought out some crackers, lured him (E.T. style) into our fence.
I don’t think he even noticed that we closed the gate behind him.

oh well. i mentioned in the earlier post that if one of the chickens were to get sick in the future you should make a post called “sing, strep-throat, SING!”

It may be in the best interest of the chickens to help you develop Farmer X-ray Vision. Or, FX-RV, if you will. It will make them…not die. which would be nice. Im just sayin’….

I’m now reading Cat’s Craddle by Voneget. I just finished “Brave New World”, it’s strange. Interesting view of the future for being written in the early 1930’s. How was he able to write about genetic engineering back then!? amazing….
