Settling In — The trials and tribulations of chickens finding a place to sleep.

As sunset came around I decided to sit and watch the chicks find a place to roost, seeing that I was outside discussing the viability of a business building small backyard chicken coops and runs for people and selling them as a package with chickens I breed (if you’re interested let me know!). Ronnie, our rooster, was the first to find a place to settle, easy for him, he’s been doing this for a few weeks and he has picked out his spot. The chicks though are still new to this, so there’s tons of excitement.

Ivy, Jessie, RonnieUnfortunately I wasn’t able to get photos of most of the action so I’ll try to share it all, but a lot happened I don’t want to be writing here for the next hour so I’ll try to speed it up.

Jessie jumped up right after Ronnie settled to find her place next to him. She was there and then apparently realized it could be warmer under his wing. So she tried to force her way under — Ronnie was tolerant at first but quickly became annoyed and pecked her still she fell off. Ivy seized her opportunity and jumped next to Ronnie. Unfortunately she didn’t learn from Jessie and suffered the same fate after also trying to ruck herself under his wing. While she was down Jessie went for it and settled in next to Ronnie. Ivy zipped back into action and tried multiple times to wedge her way in between Ronnie and Jessie but to no avail and eventually sat next to Jessie.

Then came Dahlia. Still our favorite, she’s 100% rock & roll. Her mohawk is still growing fast and looks as cool as ever. Anyway she had quite an interesting night. She too really wanted to be sitting as close to Ronnie as possible. Below is a very rough series of pictures of Dahlia finding her way to sit on the roosters back. She had tried several times like Ivy to squeeze in closer to Ronnie but she was having no luck, so instead she just jumped on his back. It was getting dark at this point so I was having a hard time taking pictures but it should give you the idea.

Anyway as the night and this post wore Dahlia fell off of Ronnie’s back and had to find her way back up. This time though she managed to muscle her way closer to Ronnie. She was sitting in between Jessie and Ivy when Pepper decided to make her move. I’m not really sure how it ended, it was getting to dark for me to keep watching but I got this picture as I left of their tentative positions:
