The Afternoon Nap

Even the big man needs some rest.

Late each afternoon, after what I suppose is a full day of foraging, eating, sitting, and more eating; chickens like to rest. I think they are building up energy for sunset when they venture into the coop again to fight through their nightly competition for position. Though, even Ronnie seems to take a few minutes to rest.

They’ve taken to grouping together in little bunches to sleep. There seems to be a separation of dominance. You’ll notice that Jessie, Buttercup and Pepper (and if you look back there you can just see Dahlia’s mohawk poking up behind them) are all together, they are among the dominant group. As opposed to Cinnamon, Clover (the least agressive chicken EVER), Dandelion and Aster all much less agressive. There’s not much else to say so I’ll let you all enjoy the too cute photos of them resting on each other.

Notice the somewhat groggy look in Cinnamon’s eye. She was asleep till me moving in for a picture jostled her awake.

Top to Bottom: Cinnamon, Clover (just the eye poking out), Dandelion, and Aster.

This one I just had to take. Ivy is back there and I just barely saw her eye poke up as my rustling stirred her from sleep.
