Clover is our ugly duckling - or ugly chick. She’s really not a terribly attractive bird like most of the others. For the most part even, she’s plain, completely black except for the white speckling on her face. She’s also HUGE, most of it is very puffy coat of feathers but she’s got quite a bit more girth than the other chickens.
She’s always been a bit more scared, a bit less agressive, and always incredibly aloof. When the chicks first started climbing the roosts in the coop trying to find their home she was the last to try to climb up. I don’t think she likes heights much but she knew that sitting on the ground alone was dangerous and cold so she had to do it.
Even when they were all young, they would group together, wander their kid size swimming pool together, but Clover would be off on her own, usually sitting. She’s easily our least active chicken. We think she’s a breed called Brahma, they are generally smaller but more rotund chickens. They are however said to be incredibly friendly, great mothers, and down right huggable! So that’s a plus.
I wish I had a picture that could clearly show you her girth compared to the others, but Clover has proven rather camera shy, well just shy would work too. She’s a wonderfully soft, gentle tempered chicken; we hope she ends up very beautiful and the envy of the flock, but for now - she’s our ugly and beloved “duckling”.
See if you can spot her in the picture above. For a hint, mouse over the picture.
