A journey of a thousand miles

Chickens sitting next to the house

We are only on an acre but to a chick that’s about 10-14 inches tall that’s probably an enormous quest to make it to the other side and lately they’ve been making it. I mentioned earlier that they seem to be more interested in wandering around the yard and closer to the house. Well here they are bunched up in my front yard.

I’m sure that’s a strange sight for anyone driving by: a rooster surrounding by some crazy looking chickens, some of them with afros. Probably not an every day sighting around here.

The good news though is that the chicks have found several places that were really in need of cleaning up. Our magnolia tree had at least a year worth of leaves and grass clippings that had gathered around the base. They came through and in one day had cleared it up to almost nothing but nice black dirt.

Being so far from the coop doesn’t seem to bother them. They simply don’t go back except at night to sleep - no more of the few times a day go back and pretend to eat trips.
