Pepper, we salute you

Goodbye to Pepper our Silver Laced Wyandotte

You may recall that Pepper was injured when a raccoon horribly attacked our chickens. Well, yesterday she didn’t return from foraging with the other chickens. It’s tragic. She seemed to be doing well but we all know the injured animal is always a prime target. She could have been caught by just about anything and we simply don’t know what, when or how.

We were having our grass mowed and during the whole thing the chicks were scared and stayed far away. When they finally wondered back Pepper was just not with them. She was a pretty chicken and she had a certain regal air. Now we’re missing both of our Wyandottes. Cinnamon was a Golden Laced Wyandotte and Pepper Silver Laced. We will hopefully replace them later this summer.

We want to try buying hatching eggs and making one of the chickens sit on them to hatch them so they will take care of them for us. We don’t want to raise chicks in our house again - it was pretty time consuming.
