The bond still holds

Barred Rocks that spend all of their time together

A long time ago I talked about how close Teresa and Julian are. The sisters and only survivors of our first attempt at raising chickens. It’s a long story but we killed most of them and these two managed to survive almost 4 weeks without any real nutrition. They’ve been very close.

They shunned the other chicks from the begining but they’ve always stuck together. They eat together and rest together and wander the yard together. A friend was in town and had read about that and observed it himself commenting on how surprised he was at how much they really only seem to do things with each other and leave the rest of the chickens alone.

Barred Rocks ignoring the other breeds

Well, it’s still happening. Teresa and Julian will often stay close by but usually do their own thing. Today they actually spent quite a long time eatting together (as pictured) while the other chickens were hiding under the porch.

I wish that I could explain their action, although the breedist nature of chickens we’ve recently noticed could be the main reason alone, although it’s a bit more romantic to imagine that it’s due to the struggles they’ve been through together. So that’s the reason we use.
