Chicks 3.0

Our new Ameraucana Chick, Leda

This is now our 3rd go round on having some young chicks. These we bought from Nicole when we got Fred. We got 4 young chicks, 2 Ameraucana and 2 Rhode Island Reds. Above is Leda, named after Jupiter’s Moon. Because of the kind of fun and wild appearance of her sister they both earned space names, Aurora, after Aurora Borealis.

Aurora, our favorite Ameraucana chick

The chicks have adapted well overall. We have to keep an eye on things and make sure they get enough to eat. Our chickens are quite happy eating all of the chicks food leaving them with very little or nothing. We have to keep an eye on bullying all around, our chickens even pick on Camellia (a new buff orpington) the largest and oldest chicken we have. But that’s the way the pecking order goes, we just keep an eye out and make sure it doesn’t get out of hand. Generally we won’t let any of the chickens pick on the babies.

Strawberry the more docile of our Rhode Island Reds

This is Strawberry, our other Rhode Island Red is named Maple.
