After all the problems we had been having, I had been planning to buy some extra chickens to fill in the gaps of the others who had been eaten by predators. Nicole is a local chicken breeder who I had been in contact with about a few buff orpington pullets and some 3-4 week old Ameraucana and Rhode Island Red chicks.
After what happened to Ronnie I called her and she agreed to sell us Fred, her Frizzle rooster, so we could have someone to keep an eye on all of our chickens. They need a rooster around to keep them in line and aware. Anyway, Fred is a good looking fella, but very different sort of roo from Ronnie.
Ronnie was bigger and had a deeper crow. Fred is cute and a little bit yippy, like a small fuzzy dog. We like him, and he does a great job keeping the hens on their toes if theres anything around. Unlike Ronnie who would make a little noise and then go back to his thing, Fred keeps on making noise until the threat has left.
Fred is just hilarious to see walking around with our girls. And the girls took to him instantly. They went to following Fred’s lead as if he’d always been there.
